All graduates will be competent clinicians and independent practitioners in providing comprehensive medication management services to ambulatory care patients.

This residency program provides residents with experience and training in delivering pharmaceutical care and ambulatory care services to patients within primary care clinics. Residents have the opportunity to gain expertise in a variety of ambulatory care experiences. Longitudinal rotations include the anticoagulation, geriatrics, and pharmacotherapy clinics.

All residents will complete an academic rotation and at least four additional elective experiences.

Postgraduate Year One Community Pharmacy Residency Program – School of Pharmacy

Residents will individualize their training by selecting from more than 20 ambulatory care and specialty pharmacy experiences. Learning experiences are selected based on the interest of the resident, availability, and interest of the ambulatory care clinic or service. Learning experiences are available in various ambulatory care clinics.

There are numerous services that have a clinical pharmacist and some that will have a non-pharmacist provider as a preceptor. The services that provide specialty pharmacy services are designated with an asterisk below and it is required that each resident do at least one of their elective rotations in one of these areas.

This residency program places an emphasis on developing the resident as a clinical educator in academia; therefore, residents will have many opportunities to develop their teaching and presentation skills. Residents are appointed to adjunct instructor with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, with access to informational, clinical, professional, and educational resources provided to UI College of Pharmacy preceptors. All residents are required to do an academic learning experience which focuses on clinical precepting.

At the end of the year, residents who satisfy program requirements will receive a certificate of participation and will have a completed teaching portfolio of activities from the year. Each resident is required to complete a yearlong research project during the residency year.

For PGY2 residents, the expectation will be more involved research. Through this experience, residents gain experience in conducting research, presenting their project in poster format, and presenting their project through platform presentation. The Residency Research Committee will be available to guide in the process.
